The second race weekend of the season did take place in Argentina at the Termas de Río Hondo circuit. Miguel Oliveira with the KTM bike took his first ever pole position in Moto2. The EG 0,0 Marc VDS duo Franco Morbidelli and Alex Márquez completed the front row.
Thomas Lüthi, Jesko Raffin and Mattia Pasini were standing in the second row. Sandro Cortese, Xavi Vierge and Xavier Simeon started from the third row.
Just after the race was started there was a collision between Takaaki Nakagami and Remy Gardner. Unfortunately Remy broke his leg in the crash.
Franco Morbidelli came into the lead, Márquez was behind him, then Lüthi, then Oliveira, Pasini, Vierge, Baldassarri, Cortese, Marini, Simeon.
Axel Pons, who was celebrating his birthday on that day, had a collision with Fabio Quartararo. The race was over for both of them.
Later also Mattia Pasini crashed. It was a big shame as he was racing on 5th position.
Then also Xavier Simeon crashed.
It all happened during first 3 laps.
Then it all calmed down a little bit. Morbidelli was still in the lead, his team mate Márquez was behind him. Miguel Oliveira overtook Lüthi for 3rd place.
Behind Lüthi there was Baldassarri and then a group of some riders fighting for P6.
During the race Andrea Locatelli went to the pits and retired. And I still don’t know if it was because of some technical problems with his bike or because his health. Because he had some stomach flu and he withdrew from the warm up in the morning. So I don’t know how he felt before and during the race.
Meanwhile, on top there was Alex Márquez coming closer to his team mate. Also Oliveira wasn’t that far away. The situation looked promising that fans maybe would see some big battle for the victory.
About 3 laps to go Márquez tried to overtake Morbidelli and he was successful. But only for a few turns. Morbidelli overtook him back. Oliveira started to lose some time so it looked it could be just between the Estrella Galicia boys.
Morbidelli made some small advantage on the first place. Márquez behind him made a mistake in the last lap and he crashed!
Franco Morbidelli won his second race of the year and also of his career. Miguel Oliveira came second and Thomas Lüthi was on the third position.
First ever podium in Moto2 for KTM bike. In their second race.
Lorenzo Baldassarri was 4th, Xavi Vierge 5th which is his best ever Moto2 result, Simone Corsi finished 6th. Francesco Bagnaia was the best rookie there on P7, Sandro Cortese was 8th, another rookie Brad Binder was 9th and Hafizh Syahrin completed the top 10.
Back to Binder. He was racing with a big pain in his arm. It was really heroic performance and result. He has been still struggling with his injury from the pre-season time. Unfortunately after some check-ups it was decided that his arm needs another surgery and Brad will have to skip some races.
Marcel Schrötter, Luca Marini, Jesko Raffin, Dominique Aegerter and Jorge Navarro were also on points.
Alex Márquez was able to finish the race with damaged bike on 21st position.
Axel Bassani was already ready to race so it was his first ever Moto2 race. He finished 25th (last). Iker Lecuona is still unable to race and unfortunately I guess it will take some time until he will be fully fit as his injuries are quite serious. So Julián Simón replaced him once again. He was 18th.
