The second race weekend of the season did take place last weekend in Argentina at the Termas de Río Hondo circuit. There were some interesting results of the qualification which looked promising that the Sunday’s race could be very exciting and unpredictable.
Marc Márquez was on pole position which probably wasn’t the biggest surprise. Karel Abraham and Cal Crutchlow were there next to him. And it was some kind of surprise.
Danilo Petrucci, Dani Pedrosa and Maverick Viñales started from the second row. In the row number three there were Valentino Rossi, Aleix Espargaró and Loris Baz.
Just after the race was started it was Jorge Lorenzo who crashed. He had some contact with Andrea Iannone’s Suzuki. Not very good start of his Ducati era for the Spanish rider.
Marc Márquez went into the lead and it took him just a few moments to built almost 2 seconds lead. Maverick Viñales made it to second place, Cal Crutchlow was 3rd with Valentino Rossi behind him.
In the lap number 4 (from 23) Marc Márquez did crash from the lead! The race was over for him. So it was Viñales who took the lead. Cruchlow was racing on the 2nd position, Rossi 3rd.
Andrea Iannone got the ride through penalty for jump start.
Then lots of other riders crashed. Alex Rins crashed, he re-joined the race but later he did come to the pits and retired from the race. Sam Lowes entered the pits and retired as well.
Behind Rossi on the 3rd place there was some interesting battle for P4. Johann Zarco was doing great job there and also Dani Pedrosa. Pedrosa made it to 4th place and then crashed.
Just a few moments later Aleix Espargaró and Andrea Dovizioso (who were in that group as well) collided! It was Espargaró who crashed and knocked Dovizioso down. Just one year after Dovizioso was knocked down by Iannone. It’s not very favourite place for the Italian it seems.
Viñales was keeping his lead but Rossi came closer to Crutchlow. And in 18th lap Rossi did it and overtook the British rider for P2.
Álvaro Bautista was racing 4th and he did some impressive lap times. But he was too far and there were just a few laps to go so it was almost impossible that he would be able to catch the guys in front of him.
So it was the double for Movistar Yamaha team! Maverick Viñales took his second victory of the season, Valentino Rossi was second and Cal Crutchlow with his LCR Honda finished on the third place.
Amazing result for the Aspar team as Álvaro Bautista was 4th. His team mate Karel Abraham also did amazing job as he finished 10th. So both riders in top 10. That’s really great achievement for the team.
Amazing result also for Monster Yamaha Tech 3 as both MotoGP rookies were in top 6. Johann Zarco finished 5th and Jonas Folger was 6th.
Danilo Petrucci was 7th but in the last stages of the race he really struggled with the tyres a lot.
Scott Redding was 8th so it’s double top 10 for Pramac Racing.
Another top 10 result for Jack Miller. He was 9th in the race.
Loris Baz was 11th, Tito Rabat 12th, Héctor Barberá 13th. First season points for the KTM team as Pol Espargaró was 14th and Bradley Smith 15th. Andrea Iannone was 16th and that was last position.
You can look at the results here at the official MotoGP website.
Maverick Viñales is the Championship leader with 50 points. Valentino Rossi is 2nd with 36 points and Andrea Dovizioso is on the 3rd place with 20 points.
Also some kind of history was made as it’s for the first time since 1992 that in all 3 categories there was same winner of the first and second race of the season. Joan Mir in Moto3, Franco Morbidelli in Moto2 and Maverick Viñales in MotoGP. So far they are unbeatable in their categories and they all have the maximum amount of 50 points in the Championship.
The next race weekend will be at the Circuit Of The Americas (COTA) in the United States, in Austin, Texas. It will be from 21st to 23rd April.
