The Championship has returned back to Europe. The first European race of the season did take place in Spain at the Jerez circuit. Dani Pedrosa started from pole position to the MotoGP race. His team mate Marc Márquez was next to him, Cal Crutchlow completed the front row so there were three Honda bikes there.
Maverick Viñales, Andrea Iannone and Johann Zarco started from the second row. Valentino Rossi, Jorge Lorenzo and Jonas Folger were in the third row.
Alex Rins injured himself in the previous round and wasn’t able to start. The Suzuki test rider Takuya Tsuda replaced him.
Dani Pedrosa did great start and went to the lead, Márquez was 2nd, Iannone 3rd. But Andrea Iannone didn’t keep this position for a long time, some of his rivals overtook him then.
Just after a few laps Pedrosa built 1 second big gap and he was escaping. Meanwhile, Johann Zarco was doing great job and made it already to the third position. He was catching Márquez was P2.
Behind these two there was a fight between Crutchlow and Iannone for P4.
And already there was a collision between Miller and Bautista and Miller was quite furious there. For his behaviour he got the 1000 euros fine.
On top, Johann Zarco overtook Márquez and he was going 2nd. But later Márquez overtook him back.
In that time Crutchlow wasn’t in the race anymore as he crashed. Just a few seconds later, in the same corner also Pol Espargarö crashed.
Later also Tito Rabat crashed and some moments ago also Andrea Iannone crashed.
Dani Pedrosa was in the first position with about 1.5 sec. lead ahead of Márquez and Zarco. Jorge Lorenzo was already on the 4th position and he tried to catch Zarco. Dovizioso was on 5th position, Rossi was going 6th, Viñales 7th.
It didn’t take long time to Lorenzo to catch and overtake Zarco for P3.
Viñales overtook Dovizioso and Rossi and was 5th and also Danilo Petrucci did come closer to these riders. Later Viñales ran wide so Dovizioso went ahead of him.
Marc Márquez tried to catch Pedrosa, the gap between them was about 0.7 but he wasn’t close enough. And even a lap later it was also more than 1 second between them. So Márquez tried to concentrate to keep P2.
Meanwhile, Valentino Rossi was struggling with his bike and he was losing positions quite quickly. Jonas Folger overtook him and later also Aleix Espargaró made it ahead of him.
Dani Pedrosa did it in the start to finish style and took his first victory of the season. Marc Márquez was second and Jorge Lorenzo was third. It was first podium for Lorenzo as Ducati rider.
Another perfect result for Johann Zarco who was 4th, Andrea Dovizioso finished 5th, Maverick Viñales was 6th, Danilo Petrucci 7th, Jonas Folger 8th, Aleix Espargaró 9th and Valentino Rossi completed top 10.
Scott Redding was 11th, Héctor Barberá 12th, Loris Baz 13th, Bradley Smith 14th, Karel Abraham 15th. Sam Lowes and Takuya Tsuda finished outside points.
Valentino Rossi keeps the Championship lead but it is very close there. Rossi has 62 points, second is Viñales with 60 points, third Márquez has 58 points and Pedrosa is fourth with 52 points. So first 4 riders are within 10 points! And some others aren’t very far behind them!
