The Italian round of the Moto2 World Championship did take place in Mugello. The Championship leader Franco Morbidelli started from pole position. His team mate Alex Márquez was next to him. Mattia Pasini completed the front row.
Thomas Lüthi, Takaaki Nakagami and Luca Marini were on the second row. Jorge Navarro, Lorenzo Baldassarri and Miguel Oliveira started from the third row.
There were some changes in the entry list. Brad Binder was back after he had to skip a couple of rounds due to his arm injury.
Iker Lecuona still wasn’t able to start as he injured himself again in Le Mans 2 weeks ago. Danny Kent was the one who repaced him in the Interwetten team.
Also Xavi Vierge couldn’t start on Sunday. He had a crash on Saturday and doctors adviced him to skip this race as Xavi had some breathing problems.
We also didn’t see Axel Bassani anymore. He and his team Speed Up split before this race weekend. Augusto Fernandéz did race in the team in Mugello.
There was also a wild card rider. It was Federico Fuligni who raced for the Forward Junior Team.
Franco Morbidelli had a good start and went to the lead but then it was Mattia Pasini who led the field to the second lap.
Already in the first lap Lorenzo Baldassarri had a nasty highsider and he took Takaaki Nakagami with him. It was over for both of them but luckily they both are all right. Nice gesture from Lorenzo later when he came to the Nakagami’s team box to say sorry and both shaked their hands.
Meanwhile, it was Mattia Pasini who was in the lead but Alex Márquez was close to him. Franco Morbidelli was 3rd but later Thomas Lüthi did overtake him. How the race was going on Morbidelli started to lose some time to the three ahead of him.
When there were 12 laps to go Stefano Manzi crashed. Later also Danny Kent crashed.
In the last lap Francesco Bagnaia crashed. It was a big shame as he was fighting in a group for P5. He re-joined the race but far away behind points.
On top it was the battle among Pasini, Márquez and Lüthi and it was a battle until the end.
Mattia Pasini took his first ever Moto2 victory! He won for the first time since Mugello 2009 but it was even in 250cc with Aprilia.
For the first time this season it wasn’t Marc VDS rider on top position.
Thomas Lüthi was 2nd and Alex Márquez 3rd.
Franco Morbideli finished 4th, Miguel Oliveira was 5th, Luca Marini 6th, Dominique Aegerter 7th, Simone Corsi 8th, Jorge Navarro 9th (best rookie in the race) and Brad Binder 10th (great job after his comeback).
Marcel Schrötter, Hafizh Syahrin, Isaac Viñales, Remy Gardner and Xavier Simeon took some points as well.
Best season race for Andrea Locatelli so far but it was still only P16 so without any points.
Franco Morbidelli is the Championship leader with 113 points, Thomas Lüthi is on the 2nd place with 100 points. Alex Márquez is 3rd with 78 points.
Next race weekend is already next week when the riders move to Spain, Barcelona for the Catalan GP.
