MotoGP: Dovizioso and Ducati win in Italy

The Italian round of the MotoGP World Championship did take place in Mugello. Maverick Viñales started from pole position, his team mate Valentino Rossi was second and Andrea Dovizioso was third.

Ducati wild card rider Michele Pirro, Dani Pedrosa and Marc Márquez started from the second row. Jorge Lorenzo, Álvaro Bautista and Danilo Petrucci were in the third row.

Some riders went to the race not in 100 % shape. For example Valentino Rossi had still some pain in his chest and abdomen after his crash during motocross training from last week. Maverick Viñales raced with some pain in his arm which he injured on Friday when in crashed in FP2. Andrea Dovizioso had some food poisoning and before the race he had to take some medicine. Also Andrea Iannone was sick before the race weekend started. Some sources even said he lost 3 kilos in 4 days!

When the red lights went off it was Valentino Rossi who came to the lead. The Italian had a rocket start! Maverick Viñales went to 2nd and Jorge Lorenzo was 3rd. Lorenzo made very good start as well.

A moment later Lorenzo even went into the lead. But it wast’t for a long time. Just a moment later Rossi overtook him back. Viñales overtook Lorenzo as well and he went back to P2. Lorenzo was 3rd and then Andrea Dovizioso and Danilo Petrucci were behind.

Aleix Espargaró had a jump start so he got the ride through penalty.

In the 4th lap Viñales went to the lead and he was leading the race for quite a long time. Andrea Dovizioso managed to get to 2nd place and started to catch the Spaniard. Valentino Rossi was 3rd but Danilo Petrucci wasn’t far behind him.

Then Marc Márquez was 5th but Álvaro Bautista was doing great race, he was close behind him and in lap number 11 he overtook the reigning World Champion. But Márquez kept behind Bautista.

Jorge Lorenzo started to lose some positions as also Johann Zarco overtook him so Lorenzo was down to 8th place.

In the 14th lap Andrea Dovizioso did the move and he went to the lead. Later also Danilo Petrucci overtook Rossi for P3. Rossi started to lose a little bit of time to the 3 ahead of him.

Danilo Petrucci was doing great lap times and he even overtook Viñales for P2. He tried to catch Dovizioso but he completely destroyed his rear tyre so then he decided to slow down a little bit. Viñales made it back ahead of him.

But Andrea Dovizioso had more than 1 second in the lead already.

In that time Pol and Aleix Espargaró wasn’t in the race anymore. Pol retired from the race due to some technical problems. Aleix was racing last after his ride through penalty. Then he went wide into the gravel and a moment ago he went to the pits and retired. So not very good day for these brothers.

On top there was still Andrea Dovizioso in the lead. Maverick Viñales tried to catch him but there were only a few laps until the end. And even the spanish rider realized that his biggest Championship rivals were behind him so it was more clever to safe at least P2 and so 20 points.

In the last lap Dani Pedrosa crashed and he took Cal Crutchlow with him. Crutchlow wasn’t very happy with the situation.

Andrea Dovizioso won the race. It was only the 3rd victory for the Italian and 2nd with Ducati. He did it on Italian bike at Italian Grand Prix. He is the first ever Ducati rider who wins at home.

Maverick Viñales came 2nd and Danilo Petrucci with another Ducati bike took 3rd place. It’s 2nd podium finish for Petrucci and 1st ever on try track.

Valentino Rossi was 4th, Álvaro Bautista 5th, Marc Márquez 6th, Johann Zarco 7th, Jorge Lorenzo 8th, Michele Pirro 9th, Andrea Iannone 10th.

On points were also 11th Tito Rabat, 12th Scott Redding, 13th Jonas Folger, 14th Hector Barberá and 15th Jack Miller.

Karel Abraham, Sylvain Guintoli (who replaced injured Alex Rins at Suzuki once again), Loris Baz, Sam Lowes and Bradley Smith went from Mugello without any points.

Maverick Viñales is in the Championship standing lead with 105 points. Andrea Dovizioso is now 2nd with 79 points and Valentino Rossi is 3rd with 75 points.

Yamaha is in the Constructor’s lead with 128 points ahead of Honda (105 p.) and Ducati (97 p.). In the Team standing it is Movistar Yamaha who is on the 1st place. They have 180 points. Repsol Honda is 2nd (136 p.) and Ducati Team is 3rd (125 p.).

Not much time to rest for the riders and teams as next race weekend is already next week. They all will move to Spain, Barcelona for the Catalan GP.
